The Intermediate Hurlers made their bow in the Intermediate Championship on Sunday when they took on Hospital Herbertstown in Caherconlish.
A beautiful day for hurling and in spite of being down a number of lads who were called up for senior duty.
We nevertheless fielded a good team and hurled very well throughout the game.
We began well with points from David Sheppard from play and frees gave us a 3 point lead.
A rather fortuous goal from a long ball in brought it back level despite most of the hurling being done by us.
We found ourselves further behind mid way through the half when a ball wasn’t cleared quickly enough and Hospital H took full advantage. This was swiftly followed by a third goal to put us under pressure.
David Sheppards accuracy from placed balls kept the scoreboard moving nicely.
Shortly before the break we scored a goal of our own when Reuben McCarthy caught a great ball before crashing the sliothar to the net..Game on.
2 further Sheppie frees put us 1 point in front at the break 1-9 to 3-2.
Our defence was well marshalled by the evergreen Brian Hartnett who also captains the team this year and in front of him Aidan Hennessy hurled well.
Mark Ryan and Neil O Gorman at midfield worked tirelessly.
The second half care was much improved with good scores from both sides especially from the free takers who did very well.
With the game entering the closing stages opportunities were created but not taken and with time almost up Hospital Herbertstown got their noses in front for the first time.
However we fought valiantly and created an opening for ace free taker Dave Sheppard to convert and end the game all square.
Some of younger lads getting a first taste of Intermediate hurling and did well namely Pauric Heaney, Evan Gilvarry, Reuben McCarthy , Ger Kearns and Gearoid Synnott.
