Limerick’s Na Piarsaigh hurlers resume rest period after Cork heroics

LIMERICK’S Na Piarsaigh players are now back on their rest period.

Limerick’s management had said that the five involved would not be involved in Saturday’s game against Cork after last weekend’s All-Ireland club semi-final loss.

But on Tuesday night, TJ Ryan Donal O’Grady and selectors had a rethink. On Wednesday morning they contacted all and by Thursday night they were at training. Shane Dowling started and hit 0-11.

But now they are to take a break and definitely miss the Antrim and Wexford games.

“Frees are so important and that was one of the key reasons that we brought someone like Shane today,” said TJ Ryan afterwards.

They are on a rest now – definitely,” he smiled.

“We recognised that this was a key game for us and we needed all hands on deck and in fairness to the lads from Na Piarsaigh they were very enthusiastic and positive about it and we have to credit them for that,” explained Ryan.

“We are glad to get something out of the game – I felt we deserved it.”

“It looked like for a while towards the end that we were going to get a draw and then looked like it was gone but in fairness to Dodge (Donal O’Grady) what a catch in the finish and tonight Shane Dowling was brilliant on the frees.”

Despite the poor start, Ryan was happy with their half time position.

“We were 0-8 to 0-2 down after what ever it was 16/17 minutes and they had a great goal chance as well. We had one or two half chances and some poorish wides but they definitely had the better start – the period before half time when we got it back to 0-9 to 0-6 was crucial for us,” recalled the joint-manager.

The response to the sending off was key.

“All over the field the character, heart and drive and determination from everyone couldn’t be faulted – from a management point of view you can’t say any more of your players,” said Ryan.

“It could come down to scoring difference but every game is going to be important. We are at home to Antrim next weekend and obviously we have to take every game as it comes and treat every game with respect it deserves .”
