We travelled to Newcastlewest to take on last years beaten finalists Kilmallock.
This was a first visit West for our lads in front of what was a fine crowd.
Our opponents looked much the sharper and imposed their game upon us early.
Playing against the breeze in the first half we struggled to get a foothold in the game and it was sharpshooter Shane Dowling who kept us in touch with his accurate free taking.
We began the game minus 3 of the All Ireland winning team having seen a couple of players suffer with sickness in the past week.
Our opponents were that bit livlier and led at the break2-10 to 0-8.
With the aid of the breeze in the second half we improved slighly and had a goal from Kevin Downes inside 10 minutes.
David Sheppard added a second goal with 10 minutes left and we had a few chances to add more goals but for a great save from the opponents net minder.
At the other end Padraic Kennedy pulled off a series of fine saves to cap a good performance.
Kevin Downes added our third goal in the closing minutes to reduce the deficit to 3 [points but it was our opponents who ended with 2 points to come home winners by 4 points 2-20 to 3-13.
Our celebrations and long season have definately had a toll but we nevertheless must pick up next weekend for Round 2 v Doon.
We had good performances from James O Brien, Padraic Kennedy, Adrian Breen and Kevin Downes.
Team: Padraic Kennedy, Gordon Brown, Mike Casey, Kieran Kennedy, Mike Foley, Ronan Lynch(0-1f), James O Brien, Alan Dempsey, Will O Donoghue, Shane Dowling(0-6,5f), David Breen, Adrian Breen, Kevin Downes(2-4), David Dempsey(0-1), David Sheppard(1-0). Sub used: Tommy Grimes
